Our Life on the Edge
Whether you consider Oswestry to be on the edge of Shropshire or of Wales, you will discover so much to fascinate you on either side of the border.

Welsh Borders

As you wander from one country into the other, you will find that the edge has softened and blurred. A certain Welshness drifts over you as you notice the names of the tiny hamlets on your journey west but only the postman and the folk who live there know if they are in England or Wales!

Towns and villages around here each have their own attraction. Stroll round the meres and mosses at Ellesmere, Shropshire’s own Lake District. There is Melverley Church at Melverley– the only timber framed church in Shropshire and in one of the most picturesque riverside settings.

Talking of churches, we’ve been told that Maesbury Church was bought in kit form from Harrods in the days when they would supply anything that was ordered! Llangollen hosts the International Eisteddfod of music and dance in July. (Did you know that they had been nominated for the Nobel peace prize?) But why not visit the steam railway or enjoy a trip along the canal on a horse drawn barge?

There is another uniqueness to this border location that may surprise you. Stay with us in town or village and then explore…. Fascinated by the Industrial revolution? Ironbridge is only down the road. Darwin’s home, our county town of Shrewsbury, is almost on our doorstep. Chester and Snowdonia are not so far away either.

Part of the attraction of our Borderlands is the chance to be a part of some of our festivals and events. Oswestry Show in August is so much more than an agricultural show, it is a true family day out and the only disappointment is that it is all over in one day. Shrewsbury Flower Show can rival Chelsea with its’ flowers but is incomparable when combined with the wealth of music on offer. And if flowers are your thing, then please make sure that are here for The Wem Sweet Pea Show, now that is a scented day!
