Welcome to Oswestry & The Welsh Borders

Oswestry 04

I really enjoy living in Oswestry because it is such a friendly town. Visitors report that our warm welcome and friendly attitude is on the top of their wish list for a holiday destination.

In summer the town comes alive with a riot of colourful flower displays. Please do wander into Cae Glas Park as it opens onto the main street and admire the flowerbeds. The town really makes an effort and has gained a Gold Award from the Heart of England “In Bloom” judges for the last 4 years.

However beautiful a summer jewel Oswestry may be, it is the setting that is superb.

The foothills either side of the Welsh border have so much to offer, whether you enjoy a sporting or sightseeing holiday or just meandering down leafy byways, there will always be something to suit you, while the number of super places to eat, at varying prices, will surprise and delight you.

I must admit though that when my young nieces and nephews visit it is mainly visitor attractions that they really enjoy plus seeing real cattle and sheep in the fields nearby.

Attractions do not always need an entrance ticket, a real ‘must’ to see is our Ironage Hillfort on the edge of town. One of the best in Europe you can wander around it, admire the magnificent views, and imagine what life might have been like 2000 years ago.

Closer to our time, Llanymynech, a few miles down the road, is also great to visit. The Romans mined there and people have been working there ever since. You will find a canal and railway both in the stages of being restored, and lime works and a Hoffman Kiln. It is looked after by an enthusiastic band of volunteers. Talking of volunteers and community spirit, the village of Whittington now own and run their own castle, while Ifton Meadow at St Martins, amongst others, are maintained and managed by local residents. Wherever you go in the town or further afield you will find communities welcoming visitors to their areas.
