From Magical Castles
Deep footprints have been left by the turbulent past of the borders so it will come as no surprise when we tell you that this is a land of castles, fortresses and battles past.

Whiitington Castle near Oswestry

Embark on your discovery trail of castles in Oswestry town itself. You may need your imagination fired to see more than a few stones on Castle Mound but survey the view and you will soon understand the strategic importance of this border town.

Leave town past the ancient hill fort of Old Oswestry and head to Whittington. Whether you believe the legend of Dick Whittington or not, you will be charmed by the ruined grandeur of the castle. Stay awhile to feed the ducks and maybe chat to one of the enthusiastic villagers who now own the castle.

Then onto Chirk – a Marcher fortress of impressive severity. Lived in for centuries by The Myddleton family, you can enjoy the feel of a family home but don’t misbehave – there are dungeons too! Talking of homes, Erddig Hall is a fascinating insight to a real ‘Upstairs Downstairs’ house. The poems describing the employees tell tales and more- no secrets here!

Further down our Welsh Border there is a castle that houses a treasure trove. Powis Castle is splendid in itself and then you can wonder at the collection of curios and treasures that Clive of India brought from his travels. The gardens here are amongst the nation’s favourites and there is usually something unusual to buy in the well stocked garden shop.

Such a wealth of stately homes and castles and a day out in Shrewsbury will take you onto yet another; Attingham Park. This elegant Regency building is sure to entrance with its ambassadorial silver collection and fascinating pictures.
