To the north is the Eisteddfod town of Llangollen and the principal North Wales town of Wrexham, the latter already a busy venue but with a vast new retail complex. Travel a little further and there is the world famous City of Chester, surrounded by its Roman walls, within which are The Rows two-tiered shopping galleries, a magnificent cathedral, Britain’s finest imperial amphitheatre and the stunning Eastgate Clock, all a short walk from the beautiful River Dee. Not far away is the celebrated Chester Zoo, and then it’s an easy ride on to Merseyside and the vibrant city of Liverpool.
Head east and experience real Shropshire countryside: the meres around Ellesmere; the quaint market towns of Wem, Whitchurch and Market Drayton; and then on to the Staffordshire moorlands, Stoke-on-Trent and the Potteries, and, beyond, the breathtaking beauty of the Peak District.
South of Oswestry is historic Shrewsbury, and nearby, ‘the geological capital of the UK’, an area with a unique diversity of rocks and landscapes, delighting in such names as The Stiperstones, Long Mynd, Wenlock Edge, Brown Clee, Titterstone Clee and The Wrekin. Also dotted about this region are the celebrated Shropshire Hill towns of Bridgnorth, Much Wenlock, Craven Arms, Ludlow, Church Stretton and Bishop’s Castle, all within easy reach of Oswestry.
Go west and the landscape changes. Our highways and byways soon give way to more mountainous terrain, with Snowdonia National Park beckoning; the lakes of Vyrnwy and Bala; steep-sided valleys; and then the beautiful coast of West Wales. Complete the compass circle by heading north and see the magnificent castles of Caernarvon and Conway, perhaps cross over to Angelsey, or stop off at the seaside resorts of elegant Llandudno and Colwyn Bay, or the more lively pleasure beaches at Rhyl and Prestatyn.
So, come to Oswestry and the borderlands and you can have the best of both worlds: around our town there is so much to see and do; but, on our doorstep, there is a whole lot more.
And consider this – if we are close to so much, then we can’t really be so very far from you! Oswestry – where Shropshire meets Wales – and where we would love to meet you!
