This is the ancient frontier between England & Wales. The Dyke was built in the 8th Century by the Saxon King Offa, king of Mercia & was used to mark & defend his western boundary against the Welsh princes. It runs for 177 miles & is an earth bank up to 8 meters high often with a ditch alongside. There are various good circular walks that use the path. |

Close by is the Montgomery Canal where the processed lime was transported. The limestone was quarried from Llanymynech hill, which was connected to the kiln by a tramway. The quarry has marked footpaths & part has been designated a nature reserve. On top of the hill are the ramparts of an ancient hill fort. Offas Dyke also traverses the hill. Open at all times |

Rodney's Pillar at the top was built by the gentlemen of Montgomeryshire who supplied oak from the area & shipped them down the river Severn to Bristol where Admiral Rodney's fleet was built. |
